This morning it was overcast, chilly and looked like rain would fall soon. We departed Nathan & Mary's house at a respectable hour and headed southeast toward the Columbia River. We had 2 options, each of which was next to the Columbia River. One small road in Washington and a freeway in Oregon. We had carefully checked our map and the little road in WA got our vote because it was - supposedly - more scenic and had great views of this massive river. We lasted until the first bridge that crossed the river, the "Bridge of the Gods." Our cousin, Judy Gire, will understand when I say that this bridge gave me the willies! Its lanes are very slim, it's made of an open-weave metal, and it had a posted speed limit of 20 mph! We made it across in one piece and headed east on the south side of the river. My recommendation - take the Oregon road. The views were spectacular, the road is relatively straight, we made great time, AND the sun came out as soon as we entered Oregon!Once back in Washington, we drove past 4 dams, the Bonneville dam being the first one at the aforementioned scary bridge. The rest are the Hood River Dam, the dam at The Dalles, and the John Day Dam. This part of the country was very windy and we saw many wind turbines in action on the surrounding hills. It's also extremely dry here and, because of the wind and the dryness, there was a lot of blowing dust. So much dust was in the air that it looked like smog!
We stopped near Kennewick, amidst all this blowing dust, at the shop in the photo which reminded both of us of the Casa de Fruta near Hollister in California. They didn't have as much dried fruit as the Casa, but the stuff they did have was fantastic! We bought - and quickly - devoured blackberries and peaches. We bought some dark chocolate-covered almonds too, but we're still enjoying those.
